About the Podcast
Welcome to Quotidian Spanish.
Do you struggle to understand when a native Spanish speaker is talking at a natural pace? Is it the case that you know enough vocabulary and grammar but when someone talks, the words blend together into something you can’t recognize?
In this podcast, you will have the opportunity to hear isolated sentences with exclusively high-frequency vocabulary spoken at a natural pace, then broken down into smaller chunks and finally put back together.
Each episode will focus on only one sentence, with the goal being to increase your listening comprehension as you recognize patterns in conversations with native Spanish speakers.
Why “quotidian?”
Did you know that the word “quotidian” means daily? Although this word is not very common in English, its counterpart, “cotidiano,” is commonly used in Spanish. The name of this podcast implies that all of the vocabulary used will be words you’d encounter in everyday situations.
According to the author Mark Davies, the 5,000 most common words in a language account for about 95% of everyday vocabulary. Even better, first 1,000 most common words account for about 85% of daily spoken language!
Knowing the most common 1,000 words or the most common 5,000 words in a language doesn’t equal fluency, but it is a huge step in the right direction! Additionally, you need to know essential grammar concepts and have a decent ability to comprehend what you hear. Quotidian Spanish is here to help you understand natural spoken Spanish, one sentence at a time.
